Knowledge for one and all: The digital services at the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History (IfZ) provide access to history from everywhere and anywhere, connecting research conducted all around the world. Our infrastructural departments make sources, data, and literature available while our researchers publish their findings online. Here is an full overview of these services:
"Zeitgeschichte Open"
Many of our publications can be read online or downloaded as a PDF file, free of charge: The “Zeitgeschichte Open” server, which we run in cooperation with the Bavarian State Library, currently provides access to selections from the series “Studien zur Zeitgeschichte” and “Zeitgeschichte im Gespräch”.

Online Catalog of the IfZ-Library
An increasing number of freely accessible publications can now be found via the Online Catalog of our library. The Bibliographical Information Service is another free, globally available service that provides information each month on new publications in the field of contemporary history.

Our library provides you with direct access to many freely accessible online databases with relevance to issues in contemporary history and current political events, all via the Datenbase Infosystem (DBIS).

The Electronic Journal Library provides you with access to numerous academic journals from around the world.
Open archives of "Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte"
The series Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte is also available in digital form: The open archives include the complete volumes from 1953 to 2016 – with no limitations to access.
Critical online edition of the diaries of Michael Cardinal von Faulhaber
The critical online edition of the diaries of Michael Cardinal von Faulhaber: The personal writings of the Archbishop of Munich are provided systematically from the original Gabelsberger shorthand script for the first time online.
"Mein Kampf" online
Since July 2022, the IfZ has also been making its critical edition of Hitler's inflammatory pamphlet available in a free online version. Like the print edition, the extensively annotated online edition makes "Mein Kampf" available as a source for scholarly work. At the same time, however, the digital version sends an important signal: free of charge and thus accessible to all, it provides a scholarly reference point to counter the "Mein Kampf" versions from often dubious sources circulating on the Internet.
Audioproject „Die Quellen sprechen“
“Die Quellen sprechen” (“The Sources Speak”) is an audioproject of the IfZ in cooperation with the Bavarian broadcasting network Bayerischer Rundfunk. The innovative format is based on the document series The Persecution and Murder of the European Jews by Nazi Germany, 1933–1945. The texts have been prepared for the broader public in cooperation with living witnesses, actors, and researchers.t.
Event archive on YouTube
On our YouTube channel you can find an archive of our recorded events – watch interesting talks and discussions whenever you have the time. But you will also find other video formats there, such as a look inside the current issue of the Vierteljahrshefte für Zeitgeschichte.
Social media appearances of the Dokumentation Obersalzberg
The Dokumentation Obersalzberg research center uses Facebook, Instagram and YouTube to provide digital access to selected histories and exhibits. One such example is the Talking Walls series available via the center’s YouTube channel.
The Center for Holocaust Studies on Facebook
The Center for Holocaust Studies is active on Facebook, presenting the team’s new publications as well as reviews, introducing the latest visiting researchers, and recommending interesting events on relevant research topics.
Construction of the Berlin Wall: An audioguide
The divide that ran through the heart of the city after the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 is barely visible today. A new app now offers the opportunity to discover this chapter of German history on site: Marking the 60th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall, the Berlin Center for Cold War Studies together with various partners has developed an audiowalk to guide you through the historic sites.
Berlin Wall Memorial
The Berlin Wall Memorial project, in cooperation with the Berlin Center for Cold War Studies, features contextual interviews with our researchers and extensive further information on the Two Plus Four Treaty that was signed in September 1990, putting a close to the chapter of German division.
"Die überforderte Behörde. Neue Forschungen zur Treuhandanstalt"
The lecture series “Die überforderte Behörde: Neue Forschungen zur Treuhandanstalt” on the overstrained “Trust Agency”, organized in cooperation with the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship that was installed to privatize East German companies, was held completely online with all lectures (in German) now available via Youtube.
