This subproject focuses on personnel policy at the Federal Chancellery along with the issue of personnel continuities and fractures with the Nazi dictatorship. The study will first turn to the aims and selection criteria of the Chancellery’s personnel policy from its founding through to the Social Democratic-Liberal coalition. A nuanced prosopographical analysis of the leadership figures will provide information on the staff’s composition, development, and former memberships in the Nazi Party. As a next step, the education, careers and the political stances will be considered, using example cases. The focus lies here on their specific actions during the Nazi era. Lastly, the study will look into how the Chancellery influenced the personnel choices of other federal agencies and the extent to which it sought and was able to wield influence in that way.
