Newspaper Searches in the Press Collection

The press collection contains newspapers and magazines published after 1914. The collections from 1914-1945 focus in particular on the press of ideological groups, in particular the conservative and nationalist movements through 1933. The main publications of the NSDAP and its organizations from the 1920s through 1945 are nearly completely in the collection. There is a smaller collection of NSDAP regional newspapers, including Gauzeitungen, newspapers of annexed and occupied areas after 1939 as well as the General Government in Poland, and local and association papers for the Jewish population within the Reich and in German-occupied Europe. The press publications of émigrés opposed to the Nazi regime constitute another area particularly sought out for collection. There are complete collections of important foreign daily newspapers throughout the period such as The Times of London, Le Temps of Paris, and the Neue Zürcher Zeitung of Zurich. The press publications of the occupying powers and the licensed press of the four occupation zones form an important part of the collection for the period after 1945, in addition to an extensive collection of newspapers from displaced persons camps. The most extensive collection is the ongoing collection of supraregional daily and weekly newspapers as well as the party and association press of the Federal Republic and of the former GDR. Particular focus is placed on the press of smaller parties, political “movements”, and marginal groups.

The newspapers are available either as originals, on microfilm, or as data files.

Many newspapers can be searched via the library’s online catalog.
