Long before ‘fake news’ became a modern buzzword, false information and rumour were already shaping how societies coped with crisis, war, and uncertainty. This lecture challenges the assumption that false information is a new threat undermining a passive, gullible public. Drawing on her work as a historian of wartime propaganda, Jo Fox argues instead that rumour and false news have deep historical roots, and far from simply corrupting democratic life, they can reveal the hidden hopes, fears, and anxieties that people cannot always express openly. In doing so, Fox reframes rumour not as a pathology of the masses, but as a window into the psychological and emotional undercurrents of society — and a reminder that attempts by the state to control information have always run up against fundamental democratic principles.

Die Veranstaltung ist eine Kooperation mit dem Lehrstuhl für Neueste Geschichte und Zeitgeschichte der LMU München und dem Centre de recherches historiques an der École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales Paris.
