The IfZ Library is internationally renowned for contemporary history. Its collection focuses on German and European history from 1918, its various international connections, National Socialism, and the Third Reich. It is open to the public as a reference library with a reading room, Mondays through Fridays from 9am to 7pm.

As of January 2019, the library holds around 176,000 printed media, 37,000 electronic media and online resources, and 112,500 articles in journals and edited collections. All its holdings can be researched online.
